Barely seven more days to his own deadline to end the almost four years debilitating power rationing christened “dumsor”, some youth of the ruling National Democratic Congress across the country are threatening to quit politics if Power Minister, Dr Kwabena Donkor, does not fulfill his promise by December 31 this year.

According to them, they have over the years toiled campaigning for the ruling party without any reward and all they expect is that party bigwigs privileged to have been appointed by President John Dramani Mahama to help prosecute the party’s agenda do so to the best of their ability.

The peeved NDC youths said, while they are fighting tooth and nail to canvass support for the party to remain in government, some appointees of the President are indifferent to that course and are “doing things that are diminishing our chances ahead of 2016.”

In several text and Whatsapp messages to radio and TV stations and comments on social media in reaction to recent improvement in the energy sector, and monitored by this paper, majority of the NDC supporters said what the Power Minister promised was not an improvement in power challenge but an end to dumsor by end of this year.

They threatened that if Dr Donkor does not put paid to his vow to lift the country for the almost four years agonizing power crisis, “we will even resign from the party before he resigns from his office; that is if he will be principled and courageous to live by his own words,” one of them said.

Power Minister Dr Kwabena Donkor at a press briefing on the erratic power situation in the country on Monday, February 2, 2015 vowed to resign as head of the power sector if dumsor persist after 2015.

“I’ll resign,” the Pru East MP audaciously told Accra based Joy FM when asked if Ghanaians should demand his head if his promise that the crisis will end by the end of the year fails to materialize.

He said the power ministry is putting in place measures to ensure the crisis is over by December.
“On behalf of the Ministry of Power, permit me to say that we are very much concerned about the current supply challenges confronting the nation and its consequences on industry, homes and the citizenry. We wish to assure that we are determined to adopt every strategy necessary to bring an end to the load shedding...what I can say is that load shedding will end this year,” Dr. Donkor said.

Even before the December 31 deadline elapses, the NDC youths are threatening that their continuous stay in politics after this year depends on Dr Kwabena Donkor’s promise to end dumsor.

In a related development, Minister of Power, Dr. Kwabena Donkor on Wednesday assured the nation through Parliament Assurance Committee that barring any unforeseen challenges, the country should be out of the load shedding by the end of this month.
