Voting By Manual Verification In 2016 General Elections Is A Recipe For Tragedy - Kofi Akpaloo

Presidential Candidate of Independent People’s Party (IPP), Mr. Percival Kofi Akpaloo has warned the Electoral Commission of Ghana to rescind its decision at the Inter-Party Advisory Committee to conduct the 2016 election with manual verification.

According to him, under no circumstance should the EC think it can conduct clean and acceptable general election in Ghana with all the potential voters to exercise their franchise without going through electronic verification process.

He insisted trying this idea in the 2016 general election will be the biggest mistake ever; thus this will open the flood gate for people with dual and multiple registrations on the voters’ register to vote more than once.

“If they should try this in 2016 general election, it will be the biggest mistake ever…perhaps they want to encourage people to go back and re-register to have more multiple registrations on the register. We in IPP are not ready for this,” he warned.

In a statement copied to Peacefmonline.com, he reiterated that “if the electoral commission is seriously thinking of preventing disenfranchising Ghanaian electorates, they should rather conduct nationwide pre-election verification exercise to encourage voters to go and verify their registration electronically”.

Voting With Manual Verification In 2016 Ghana's General Elections Is A Recipe For Tragedy

The EC should not under any circumstance think they can conduct clean and acceptable general elections here in Ghana by all stakeholders if potential voters can exercise their franchise without going through electronic verification process. Why should the Electoral Commission think and arrive at that decision, we want to know?

If they should try this in 2016 general elections, it will be the biggest mistake ever.

We presume they want to activate or allow people with dual and multiple registrations on the voter register to vote more than once. Perhaps they want to encourage people to go back and re-register to have more multiple registrations on the register. We in IPP are not ready for this.

If the Electoral Commission is seriously thinking of preventing disenfranchising Ghanaian electorates, they should rather conduct nationwide pre-election verification exercise to encourage voters to go and verified their registration electronically.

For a peaceful 2016 general elections the EC should stick to the No Biometric Verification No Vote policy. Nobody should be allowing to vote without going through electronic verification else it will open up the worm-can for electoral malfeasance and exploitation.
