Agbesi Boys Sue Ashaiman NDC Candidate

Ernest Henry Norgbey, National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ashaiman constituency, is in hot waters following a suit filed against him by some aggrieved followers of Alfred Kwame Agbesi, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ashaiman.

The six plaintiffs – Kosi Mordzifa, who was Agbesi’s campaign coordinator during the NDC parliamentary primary in the constituency; Habel Adjei, a former organizer and member of Alfred Agbesi’s campaign team. Others are Abba Williams, Aheto Emmanuel and Emmanuel Sekou, party activists.

The party activists are demanding a re-run of the parliamentary contest in the constituency, saying there was a breach of the party’s own rules and regulations.

According to the suit filed at the Tema high court on Monday, the plaintiffs claimed the vetting committee of the NDC erred in clearing Mr Norgbey to contest the party’s primary on November 21, 2015.

The plaintiffs, among other things, are praying the court to declare as ‘null and void’ the November election as it was against the party’s constitution.

The suit stated that the provision in the party’s constitution and the eligibility guidelines for contestants of the parliamentary candidacy disqualified Mr. Norgbey since he is not an indigene and does not reside in the area, therefore the decision to allow him to contest the election was unlawful.

Mr Norgbey, who defeated Mr Agbesi during the contest, said he was ready to meet the plaintiffs in court when contacted.

It would be recalled that some party supporters had earlier questioned Mr. Norgbey’s eligibility to contest the NDC primary in Ashaiman since he was not resident in the constituency, but he challenged them to go to court if they wanted.

He argued that the people making the allegations were ill-informed and did not know much about the Ashaiman constituency.
