Drivers Urged To Upgrade Knowledge

Mr Thomas Bismark Boakye, Western Regional Director of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) has asked drivers to upgrade their knowledge in driving in order to handle the modern vehicles coming on the market.

He noted that technology and modernisation has affected manufacturing of vehicles, which requires drivers to learn more to enable them handle such cars with perfection.

Mr Boakye made the call at a day’s seminar in Takoradi by the Regional office of the NRSC for representatives of commercial drivers, car dealers, safety and transport officers, insurance companies, as well as transport officers from workplaces including the oil companies.

Speaking on standardisation vehicles tyres, he said vehicles must be loaded according to the standard of the tyres to prolong their lifespan and also prevent the roads from destruction.

He noted that heavy duty vehicles are the worst damaging roads.

He said his outfit would intensify the implementation of Regulation 62 of Legislative Instrument 2180 on Standardisation of Vehicle Tyre and any driver caught violating the regulation would not be punished.

According to Mr Boakye, research indicates that 30 per cent of road accidents are caused by sub-standard tyres.
To this end, he said, the office has outlined a programme to educate the public on the need to adhere to traffic regulations.
