Court Freezes Former NHIA Boss's Account

The bank accounts of the former Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Mr Sylvester Mensah has been frozen by the Ghana Financial Intelligence Centre.

This followed an ex-parte application filed at the Fast Track High Court (Financial Division) by the Financial Intelligence Centre.

The court granted the application on Thursday morning.

The former NHIA boss is being investigated by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) over false claims paid to some medical facilities.

The BNI began investigations into the issue of false claims by some 10 suspected medical facilities which have already resulted in the arrest of some five officials at the NHIA headquarters with three of them sent to court to be remanded while the other two have been granted bail.

The former NHIA Chief Executive tendered himself to the BNI on the New Year Day, January 1, after seven armed BNI operatives stormed his residence at Tse Addo near Trade Fair in Accra the previous night (31st December) in his absence.

He was later granted bail after over eight hours of intense interrogation at the headquarters of the BNI.

The mode of treatment meted out to the former NHIA Boss, a known activist of the ruling National Democratic Congress by the BNI, was not countenanced by party sympathizers who thronged the state security's headquarters in his support.
