Transport fares will remain unchanged until Thursday, January 14, when stakeholders in the transport sector will meet again to review fares, following the hike in the prices of petroleum products.

This followed an inconclusive meeting held by the Transport Review Committee in Accra yesterday.
It was the first meeting of the committee, which meets bi-annually (January and June) to review transport fares to correspond with fuel prices and other components that go into the running of commercial road transport services.

A communiqué issued after the meeting, and jointly signed by the General Secretary of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Mr. Issah Khaleepha, and the acting General Secretary of the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council, Andrew Akwesi Kwakye, requested transport operators to “maintain the current fares until further notice”.

Fuel prices went up between 18 and 28 per cent and took effect from New Year’s day January 1, in accordance with the Energy Sector Levy, introduced by government, and passed by Parliament, before it rose for the Christmas festivities.

The increment had led to calls by commercial drivers for an immediate upward review of transport fares to march the fuel price hikes, which they claim is having a toll on their income.

Per the regulations of the transport operators, any increment beyond 12 per cent warrants a corresponding transport fare increase.

Fuel prices were set to go down by 10 per cent, if the levy had not been increased.
