Mrs. Lucy Awuni, Upper East Deputy Regional Minister has urged all stakeholders in the Education Sector, to complement Government�s efforts at promoting the study of Science related subjects in Schools especially at the second cycle and the tertiary education level. The Minister said this at the close of a Regional Science, Technology and Mathematics Education (STME) Clinic, held at the Bolgatanga Senior High School in the Upper East Region, at the Weekend. Mrs. Awuni told the stakeholders, including the Private Sectors and Members of Parliament (MPs), that Science and Technology played a crucial role in National Development, saying that, the advancement of the developed countries was attributed to the endowment and application of Science and Technology. She said the country needed to groom young people with knowledge and skills in the application of Science and Technology to enable the country to exploit its natural resources. She said government was committed to Science Education and that was why the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) and the Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) were sponsoring the STME Clinic, organized in the Region. Mrs. Awuni stressed the need for Stakeholders to contribute to Science Education, especially MPs from the Northern Regions, by helping to resource schools with science equipment and support the periodic organization of STME Clinics. The Minister also urged the students to take their studies seriously particularly in the Sciences and that, they stood to gain a lot from it in future. Ms Felicia Akuribire, a Medical Student from the University of Ghana, who was a beneficiary of the STME Clinic, noted that, she was motivated by the Clinic to pursue science and later enter the Medical School and urged the students to take Science and Technology seriously. The Students were taken through the applications of the various related science Subjects, including Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Chemistry as well as counselling and guidance. The STME Clinic, which was on the theme �Promoting Quality Science and Technology Education for Sustainable National Development�, drew 240 students, majority being girls, from Junior High Schools in all the nine districts in the Upper East Region. The STME Clinic programme for girls was instituted as a project in 1987 with the main objective of bridging the gender gap that existed in the field of science and technology and promoting gender balance in the study and application of science. It is also aimed at developing and maintaining science and technology culture among the Ghanaian Citizenry, especially girls, for national development. It also provides an ideal atmosphere for exposing the youth to STME, bringing out their best and exposing them to opportunities available for them in the areas of Science and Technology Mrs. Veronica Ayamga, Regional Coordinator of the STME, thanked the RCC, MMDAs and Chiefs in the Region for sponsoring the Programme since it had enormous benefits for the children.
