Prisons Officers GO WILD

Tension is mounting within the corridors of the Ghana Prison Service over allegations that the Director General, Ms. Matilda Baffour-Awuah has mounted a hate campaign against some personnel of the Service.

Some aggrieved officers in a petition claimed that the Director General, Ms Baffour-Awuah bypasses laid down procedures of the Service and handles issues of promotion to satisfy her whims caprices, sometimes, sidestepping seniors and promoting their juniors.

The New Crusading GUIDE has learnt that there are two different petitions on Madam Baffour-Awuah at the Ministry of Interior and the Presidency.

According to the petition dated January 10, 2016, the officers said that morale in the service is at its lowest ebb in recent years.

The officers said in the petition that there are occasions that the Director General bypasses senior officers and issue instructions to junior officers.

According to them, fellow officers could not relate among themselves without incurring the wrath of the Director General.

"If you are not lucky and Director sees you talking to somebody she doesn't like, then you are in trouble," they said.

They said that the Director General instead of looking at how best to make the prisons better was fighting officers over nothing.

The petitioners said that issues relating to the welfare of personnel do not bother the Director General.

"Accoutrements for personnel and other things do not exist but the Director is doing nothing about it" they said.

The petitioners said that arbitrary transfers were part of the ways the Director General victimizes personnel.

"If Director General does not like you she can transfer you without recourse to proper procedure," they said.
