Ghana projecting 25 athletes at the Rio Games - Chris Essilfie

Chef de mission for the 2016 Rio Olympics for Ghana, Chris Essilfie has revealed to Ghana Sports newspaper that about 25 athletes will represent the country.

Projecting the number of athletes to participate in the games, the Chef de mission is hopeful Ghana will be ready for the games.

According to Essilfie, team Ghana would have qualify before making the grade to compete at the Rio games and with lack of funds and resource, more athletes might not be able to participate at the games scheduled for Brazil in August.

“We‘re still hoping to qualify more and if there are funds to do that we could qualify more athletes to the games. After meeting with the federations heads and listening to what they have on paper, it is clear we are going to qualify at least 25 athletes to the games,” he said.

Ghana lost out to the major team event that is football for both men and women and the national hockey team.

Ghana have not won an Olympic medal since 1992 Barcelona when the Black Meteors won bronze and finished in the top three of the football tournament.

Ghana will be experiencing its 24 years medal drought in the Olympic history in August.
