The Executive Director of Data Protection Commission (DPC), Mrs. Teki Akuetteh Fal-coner, has bemoaned the reckless sharing of personal information through various mediums and called for a halt in the practice.
“Barrage of privacy invasions through various mediums have led to discrimination, damage to professional reputations, financial losses and in some cases loss of lives,” she stressed.
Mrs. Akuetteh Falconer was speaking at a press briefing on the Commission’s maiden data protection conference, scheduled to come off this week in Accra.
The DPC was established under the Data Protection Act in 2012 to protect the privacy of the individual and personal data by regulating the processing of personal information.
The conference, under the theme, “Creating the right balance between the need for information and data protection”, forms part of the commission’s annual awareness creation efforts to promote good practice among data controllers and processors.
She urged data controllers including network operators and financial institutions to ensure processed data of individuals were not shared without their consents.
The DPC chief called on the public to report to the commission in the event of illegal disclosure of personal data for immediate investigation and redress.
She said complying with data regulations by both individuals and organisations would make the country a favourite destination for trade and investment.
The chairman of the board of Governors of the commission, Prof. Justice Samuel Kofi Date-Bah, said the conference is one of the steps to win the trust and confidence of the public in the com-mission’s duty to establish and maintain systems to protect against breaches of the Data Protection Act.
