57-Year Old Mother Enrolls In Basic School

A 57-year old mother of five has enrolled at the Obuasi-Brahabebome Independence Primary ‘B’ School in the Obuasi Municipality, with one overriding purpose - to acquire basic numeracy skills to sustain her retail trade.

Madam Rita Offin, who deals in fabrics, said her inability to keep proper records on her daily sales had not been helpful to the growth of her business.

She told newsmen that she was tired of the endless argument and quarrel with customers over items sold to them on credit.

“It cannot continue like this – there must be a way out, and I have no doubt in my mind that formal education is the answer,” she added.

Madam Offin, whose eldest child is aged 39 years, said her husband had given his full backing and that she was determined to work hard to achieve her academic dream.

She has now been enrolled in basic four and promised not to allow anything to distract her.

The Head teacher, Mrs. Faustina Mensah, said she initially thought the woman was joking when she came to the school to register, but subsequent events had shown that she was indeed serious.

She had been regular, punctual and making good progress in the classroom.

Miss Sali Hellin Sedah, her class teacher, pledged to do everything to help her.
