KIA Security Brouhaha

Nana Gyamfi, Executive Director of Pathfinders International Aviation Services Limited, a company 90% owned by a Nigerian at the commencement of business, says all employees of the company are Ghanaians.

The company provides security services to airlines at the Kotoka International Airport.

According to him, the Nigerian who holds 90% shares is not involved in the administration of the company.

He was reacting to a petition filed by some Ghanaian security companies that are enraged that Pathfinders International is providing security services to airlines at the airport.

The company on Monday began proving security services to British Airways after winning a bid.

Until Monday, the British Airways contract was being handled by Glory Heights Profile Consult Limited, a wholly Ghanaian-owned company.

The local security firms argue that allowing a foreign company to protect Ghana’s international airport could pose a threat not only to the business interests of Ghanaian companies but also to national security.

But Nana Gyamfi explained that he is only partnering a Nigerian to offer the services and that his entire staff are Ghanaians.

He confirmed that the Nigerian, Obbinah Onyenso, holds 90% shares in Pathfinders International Aviation Services Limited at the time the company commenced business in 2010.

He showed The Finder its certificate of registration dated November 25, 2005, and in 2009 it was granted certificate to commence business.

According to him, in 2015, Lufthansa and Alitalia airlines, the company’s major clients, pulled out of Ghana, rendering Pathfinders International virtually redundant, compelling them to bid for the British Airways business.

According to him, his firm was selected in a competitive bidding process following a request made by the airline.

Nana believes that if Nigerian banks and other companies operate in Ghana, there is nothing wrong with his company providing security services to airlines at KIA.

The indigenous Ghanaian companies accused Pathfinders International of constantly undercutting the service charge prices in order to get the business.

“These negative acts are gradually weakening Ghanaian businesses and disposing us in our own country”, the petition said.
