Obrempong Antwi Tabiri, Chief of Susuanso in the Tano North District of Brong-Ahafo Region, has said there is the need to maintain the peace of the country.
He said the need for all Ghanaians is peace and unity not only in an election year but at all times.
Obrempong Tabiri made the call when speaking with the media on Monday at his palace after the installation ceremony of Nana Kwame Appiah-Kubi I as Kurontihene of the town.
He said the occurrence of conflicts, civil wars and other “dreadful incidents” among Ghana’s neighbouring countries was because of intra and inter-political parties misunderstandings and cautioned Ghanaians to avoid all such tendencies that could trigger violence.
Obrempong Tabiri said before the colonisation of the country by the Europeans, the system ‘democracy’ was not foreign to our traditional authorities and that the system of traditional rule had its own forms of checks and balances.
He expressed worry that the current democratic dispensation had divided the nation instead of uniting it.
He said it had allowed some members of the populace, under the guise of freedom of expression, to engage in “unproductive behaviour” that could mar the peace of the country.
He advised Ghanaians to always place premium on the general progress of the nation before their individual interests.
