Thirty-three children have been rescued from being trafficked to Nigeria, from Tatale and its surrounding communities, in the Tatale-Sanguli District of the Northern Region.

They were intercepted by Immigration officers at the Tatale border.

Mr. Eric Afari, Northern Regional Commander of the Ghana Immigration Service, who revealed this to The Ghanaian Times, said the children were aged between 10 and 17 years.

He explained that the rescue was made possible through the collaboration and cooperation of their Togolese counterparts.

One person has been arrested in connection with child trafficking but refused to disclose the identity, citing security reasons.

Mr. Afari explained that the suspect was in the custody of the Togolese police, pending investigations.

“This case is under investigation, and all found culpable will be dealt with according to the law,” he warned.

Mr. Afari stressed that child trafficking was on the ascendency, particularly along the Eastern Corridor of the country.

“The incidence of child trafficking is on the increase along the Eastern Corridor, especially at Zabzugu, Tatale, Nkwanta North and South Districts,” the Immigration commander emphasised.

He warned parents to desist from giving their children to foreigners to be sent away for monetary gains, stressing that anyone caught would be severely dealt with.

Mr. Afari commended the government for the passage of the Immigration Law which allowed the immigration officers to handle weapons, saying it would empower them and that will lead to the reduction in crime at the borders, as well as help prevent unwanted persons in the country.
