The recent death of NPP MP for Abuakwa North, Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu at his residence at Shiashie in Accra has raised concern for maximum protection to all members of parliaments.

Some of the lawmakers are left with no alternative but to own a personal firearm for their safety in case of any attack.

Whether or not government will hear the plea of the MP’s - the Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has strongly kicked against the request to arm members of the legislature.

Even though Mr Pratt regard the MP's job as one of the most ‘important’ professions in the country – he maintained that they are not “more” important than other businessmen who bring money into the system.

“Why should government protect politicians [MPs] and leave businessmen?” he quizzed during a panel discussion on Accra-based ADOM FM.

The veteran journalist however argued that – Ghanaians in general need protection but it will be impossible for the state to assign “one policeman and one gun” to each person including members of parliament.

“We can’t do that as a nation,” he said. 

Mr Pratt, in his submission, recommended that – it will be prudent for government to house all MP's in a gated community with tight security.
