Demand In Oral Contraceptive Pills High During Vals Day

Demand in oral contraceptive pills soared in the Sunyani Municipality on the eve this year’s Valentine Day, comparative to that of condoms, a Ghana News Agency (GNA) market survey has revealed.

Information gathered from some pharmaceutical shops in the Regional capital indicated that the pill was a preferred choice over other contraceptives for many on Sunday which marked the worldwide celebration of the Valentine’s Day.

The day originated by a Catholic devout priest, according to historical facts, is set aside to show love for the needy and destitute, but in modern times, it has been widely misconstrued for promiscuity.

Chemical shop and Pharmacy attendants told the GNA that sales in condoms, however dropped drastically during this year’s celebration of the Day.

They could however neither give last year’s sales figures nor assign any reason to the public’s preference in oral contraceptives.

Some of the pharmacy shops visited include Mossay Pharmacy, Green Light Pharmacy, Anokye Pharmacy, Sienti Chemist, and MedCourt Pharmacy shops, all in Sunyani.

Apart from the dip in sales, enthusiasm and excitement in the celebration has waned over the years as expressed in the street interviews the GNA also conducted.

Most interviewers who pleaded anonymity echoed the same sentiments that “times are too hard for lascivious escapades”.

The general red-colour euphoria which saw most celebrants donning red colours-signifying love, was also not there as it was some years back.

In a related development traders engaged nicely-decorated red and white hampers, red and white teddy bears, panties, flowers, chocolates and other valentine gifts items in the Municipality, complained of low sales.

They also confirmed that the decline in sales is attributable to dwindling public interest.
