Govt Sued Over Suspension Of Alavanyo, Nkonya Peace Process

The Government of Ghana has been sued for suspending a peace process initiated by a Non-Governmental Organisation, 'Youth for Peace and Security-Africa' towards settling the long standing bloody dispute between Alavanyo and Nkonya people in the Volta Region which has been pending for the past 19-years.

In a suit filed at the Human Rights Division of an Accra High Court by Abraham Korbla Klutse through his lawyer Alex Mantey Osei, the applicant is seeking a declaration in a Human Rights court that “The suspension of Abraham Klutse's organisation on December 2, 2014 by the Volta Regional Coordinating Council from operating in the Volta Region violated the applicant's fundamental human rights as guaranteed by the 1992 constitution article 21 (1e) and article 23 of the 1992 constitution.”

Lawyer Mantey Osei is also “Claiming damages for the violation of the applicant's fundamental human right, especially, the right guarantee under article 21 (1e) and 23 of the 1992 constitution and any other cost that maybe deemed fit.”

The peace building process, which started in December 2013, was embraced and supported by both Alavanyo and Nkonya youth groups.

Mr. Cosmo Sarpong, the spokesperson of Nkonya youth and Daniel Kofitse, the Secretary and the Youth Leader of Alavanyo have filed their applications in support of the application.

They both confirmed to the DAILY HERITAGE in an interview about their support to have the peace process truncated in December 2nd 2014 to be restored.

The two groups have come together to back the applicant by filing their affidavit in support because they are frustrated their process has been truncated by the Coordinating Council that has been part of all the processes started in 2013.

Suspension letter

The suspension letter signed for the regional minister by Ibrahim Al-Hassan, the regional coordinating director said, “The Volta Regional Security has noted with dismay the way you are using your organisation, 'Youth for Peace and Security-Africa' to bring the Volta Regional Co-coordinating council, all other security agencies and other stakeholders into disrepute in your bid to project the image of your organisation and hence obtain some benefits thereof.

“It is worthwhile to remind you that when 'Youth for Peace and Security-Africa started operating in the region in December 2013 , the Volta regional co-coordinating council formally introduced your organisation to the two municipal/district assembles in the Alavanyo and Nkonya conflict area as well as letter to the regional peace council all as a way to help you do your work successfully but this assistance could not satisfy you, hence, an attempt to disrespect their intelligence and the various attempts government is taking to resolve the conflict,” it stated .

“To forestall any further embarrassing actions from 'Youth for Peace and Security-Africa,' the security council is suspending your organisation from operating in the region until further consultations and security checks are done to ensure your credibility and capacity to undertake conflict resolution and peace building activities.”
