KIA Air Traffic Services To Be Disrupted?

The Finder can confirm that the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has held a meeting yesterday to resolve the possible disruption of air traffic services to the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), beginning this Friday.

In a statement, the Ghana Air Traffic Controllers Association (GATCA) and the Ghana Air Traffic Safety Electronics Association (GATSEA) said there would be a disruption of air traffic services to the country’s only international airport from Friday, February 19, 2016 until further notice.

According to the statement, the situation is due to the misunderstanding between the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) and the Air Navigation Wing of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, of which no fruitful solution has been found to resolve the issue.

The statement said en route aircrafts overflying the Accra information region shall not be affected and will continue to enjoy the excellent air traffic services.

The GCAA confirmed the story to The Finder, and said the GCAA had wanted to resolve the issue amicably without it getting into the public domain, adding it is strange how a media release was issued to that effect.

“It is true that there will be a possible disruption at the airport but they (GATCA and GATSEA) were cautioned not to send any media release. Management wanted to resolve the issue internally,” the source disclosed.

“Management has even called an emergency board meeting to resolve the issue, but they were taken aback by the statement that was released. As it stands now, we don’t know what will happen next,” the source added.

However, when reached for their side of the story, the GACL denied knowledge of the story.
