Water Shortage Hits Winneba And Surroundings

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has appealed to government and stakeholders to send water tankers to supply water to Winneba and its surrounding communities.

The appeal follows a severe water shortage in the area over the past two weeks due to the drying up of the Ayensu River which is the main source of water supply to the Winneba Water Station.

A statement signed by Mr Steve Kamasa on behalf of the Registrar, and made available to the Ghana News Agency in Winneba, said the situation has negatively affected the daily activities of people living in and around Winneba.

Attention of stakeholders and government are urgently being drawn to this situation, for alternative arrangements to be made to address the issue in the shortest possible time, it said.

The statement suggested that water tanker services could be sent round for residents in Winneba to buy at a reasonable cost.

It said students had returned to the University of Education Winneba for their studies and would need water for their daily activities.

It said the management of the University has made arrangements for water tankers to serve students and staff, however, the institution’s efforts may not be sufficient in addressing the challenge if the situation prolongs.

“So far the UEW has spent an estimated amount of 10,000 Ghana Cedis on addressing the water challenge for its constituents”.

Meanwhile the Effutu Municipal Assembly has initiated the process for water tanker services to supply water to high level areas and rural communities that have been severely hit by the shortage.

The Fire Service Tender will collect water from the Agona Konyako Water Treatment plant for supply to affected areas on Saturdays and Sundays at the expenses of the Assembly.

The Assembly’s effort is to prevent the situation where people may be forced by the situation to use unhygienic water that could result in the outbreak of an epidemic.
