Abuakwa North Bye-Election Slated For April 5

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has set April 5, 2016, for the conduct of a by-election in the Abuakwa North Constituency.

The decision by the electoral body follows the demise of J. B. Danquah-Adu, who was the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area.

Article 112 (5) of the 1992 Constitution mandates the EC to conduct a by-election within 30 days after being notified of a vacancy in the House of Representatives by its Clerk.

The said article states “Whenever a vacancy occurs in Parliament, the Clerk to Parliament shall notify the Electoral Commission in writing within seven days after the vacancy occurred, and a by-election shall be held within thirty days after the vacancy occurred”.

Mr. Danquah-Adu was murdered in the early hours of February 9, 2016 at his residence in East Legon by unidentified assailants.

One of the suspected culprits has since been arrested and facing prosecution.
