Police SWAT Unit On Demolition Spree Victim Petitions IGP, Chief Of Staff

The SWAT UNIT of the Ghana Police Service has been accused of throwing caution to the wing and embarking on illegal demolition of property belonging to private citizens.

The elite team of the Police is being used by one Emelia Adjorkor McQuaye to embark on that demolitions despite various court rulings against the said lady, a petition sent to the Chief of Staff and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Okpelor Sowah Din Family of Nmai Dzorn stated.

“The said lady (Emelia Adjorkor McQuaye) is using armed members of the SWAT UNIT to intimidate lawful Grantees of our lands, lands she has no legal titles to and on more serious note, demolishing properties under our jurisdiction without any court order but by strength of the presence of the SWAT UNIT”

The family believes that the action of the Police is a “gross abuse of State institutions and against tenets of the 1992 Constitution”

The family therefore on 12th January, 2016, sent a petition to the Chief of Staff, IGP, Interior Minister, Regional Police Commander to intervene in order to prevent possible “bloodshed”.

“The lady is using a unit of the Ghana Police Service to carry out such unlawful acts and that if any reaction is to ensue, there would be bloodshed in Nmai-Dzorn due to her conduct”.

The petitioners explained that “it is well settled by a Court ruling that this said lady and any land title she purports to hold in regard to any land in Nmai-Dzorn, is fraudulent because any title she holds regarding lands, is from custodians of Nungua lands and not from custodians of Nmai-Dzorn lands. And jurisdictionally, Nmai-Dzorn lands are distinct from Nungua lands”.

The petition was signed by George Tetteh Wayoe, Solicitor for the Okpelor Sowah Din Family.

The SWAT Unit has virtually turned the site into a Police camp as they are seen there on daily basis fully armed and with their official cars parked there for several hours.

The demolitions which took place recently, were under the supervision of the SWAT Unit making it impossible for the said legitimate owners of the property to prevent them.

Rumor has it that the said lady has in turn sold the property to a top government official (name withheld for now) who is in the process of developing the land.

Please stay tuned.
