Abuakwa North Goes For By-Elections On March 29

The Electoral Commission (EC) has set March 29, 2016 for a by-election in the Abuakwa North Constituency in the Eastern region to elect a new Member of Parliament (MP).

The seat became vacant after the gruesome murder of Joseph Boakye Danquah Adu, MP for the Abuakwa North constituency at his residence.

J.B. Danquah was stabbed to death at his Shiashie residence in Accra on February 9.

The police subsequently launched an investigation into the matter, which led to the arrest of one Daniel Aseidu, popularly known as ‘Sexy Don Don’ and other suspects. He has been arraigned before court.

In accordance with Article 112(5) of the Constitution, as amended, EC would open nominations for the election on March 1 and 2 at the district office of the Commission.

According to a statement signed by Amadu Sulley, Deputy Chairman (Operations) of the EC, nomination forms could be obtained from the district office or the regional office of the Commission in Koforidua.

“Candidates for the election shall provide two recent photographs with red background, showing the full face and both ears. The filing fee for the election is GH¢1,000. All interested candidates and political parties are to take note and be guided accordingly,” Mr Sulley said.
