A 31-year-old agent,popularly called ‘goro boy’, at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) Office at 37, Accra, Reginald Amenuglo, has been arrested by the Police for allegedly producing fake driver’s licence for a driver at the cost of GH¢900.00.
The suspect is in Police custody assisting with investigations.
Briefing the media in Accra yesterday, the Head of the Nima Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, Hajia Sa-ad Mohammed, said during a routine road exercise on Monday, a commercial driver, Malik Mohammed was arrested for using fake driver’s licence.
The Commander said, the driver led the Police to the DVLA Office at 37, where Amenuglo was arrested.
Hajia Mohammed said when the suspect was questioned, he claimed the deal was in collaboration with an ‘insider’ at the DVLA office who was yet to be identified.
She said the suspect claimed he collected part payment of GH¢600.00, leaving
GH¢300 to be settled by the driver, adding that her outfit had intensified investigation into the matter to arrest the ‘insider’ and possibly other ‘insiders’.
According to the Commander, the commercial driver also mentioned a driver, who he alleged introduced him to the agent.
The Divisional MTTD Commander expressed worry that some drivers haste to acquire driver’s licence without going through training or driving schools, saying that some of the road accidents could be attributed to that.
Concerning the commercial driver, the Commander said, a driving test conducted on him, revealed that he had no idea on basic driving and road signs.
Hajia Mohammed said, the driver could not identify a single road sign on a National Road Safety chat shown to him.
She, therefore, urged prospective drivers to go through right process to acquire licence and not through agents.
