Yendi Rainstorm Victims Appeal For Assistance

Victims of a rainstorm in the Yendi Municipality have appealed for assistance to ameliorate their suffering.

An estimated 942 people who were displaced by the rainstorm are putting up with relatives while others are living in uncompleted buildings.

The victims told the Daily Graphic that they were yet to receive any support from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Municipal Assembly since the rainstorm hit the municipality on February 29, 2016.

Damages

Ninety-three houses, including two mosques, were damaged while 368 rooms had their roofs ripped off.

Two siblings, Saeed Abdul Rauf and Sahida Abdul Rauf, sustained injuries on the leg and a deep cut on the right eye respectively.

A mango tree also fell on a saloon car with registration number GN7534 Y destroying the car and a nearby house as a result.

The hardest hit communities are Madina and Guntingili both in the municipality.

Mr Alaru Issifu, a victim of the disaster, said currently, he and his family are sleeping in an uncompleted building following the damage of his house at Madina.

He, therefore, appealed to the NADMO and the assembly to come to their aid before the rains set in.

Another victim, who is a widow, Madam Zenabu Amadu, said nine of her rooms at Guntingli had their roofs ripped off and that she was now putting up with a relative in Yendi.

The Yendi Municipal NADMO Coordinator, Mr Kofi Digah, who conducted the Yendi Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Alhaji Issah Zakari, round the affected communities, described the situation as sad and called for urgent support for the victims.

He further appealed to religious, benevolent and non-governmental organisations (NGO) to come to the aid of the victims.

The MCE, for his part, said the assembly was mobilising relief items for the victims.

He however advised the people to plant more trees around the houses to serve as windbreak during rainstorms. Alhaji Zakaria admonished them to always obtain building permits from the assembly before constructing their buildings with quality materials.
