Mr James Gunu, the District Chief Executive for Akatsi North in the Volta Region, says he will deepen the ties between the National Association of Local Government Authorities (NALAG) and traditional authorities for effective local governance.
Mr Gunu, an aspiring President for NALAG, said when elected his administration would collaborate with the nation’s traditional rulers for the citizenry to feel the real impact of the local governance system.
This, he explained, was because the traditional authorities had effectively managed the affairs of the country before the advent of the colonial administration, saying as the custodians of the land and the lords of the people “we cannot do without them”.
Mr Gunu made the statement in Sunyani when he paid a courtesy call on Nana Yaa Nyamaa II, paramount queen of the Sunyani Traditional Area to announce his intention to contest the Presidency of NALAG.
The call was also to interact with Nana Nyamaa as part of the worldwide commemoration of the International Women’s Day and encourage her to pursue the efforts she is making for the welfare of women, especially the girl-child in the traditional area.
NALAG is holding its 19th biennial delegates conference in Sunyani, on the theme, “Localising the Post-2015 Agenda: The role of MMDAs in the Effective Delivery of the SDGs in Ghana”.
The three-day conference, to be climaxed with an election of new national executives to steer the affairs of the association for the next two years, is being attended by 1,080 delegates, five each from the 216 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the country.
He pledged to provide a creative and innovative leadership to make NALAG a vibrant, transformed and a much relevant Association.
Nana Nyamaa commended Mr Gunu and his team for calling on her, saying that was a mark of respect and honour for traditional authorities.
She advised him to put God first in all his endeavours and as a politician, practice an open-door policy when elected as the President of NALAG.
