Baby Abandoned Near Kata Hostel

An eight-month-old baby girl suspected to have been abandoned by her mother has been found near the Kata Hostel, Kwashieman, in Accra.

The baby, whose cry attracted some good Samaritans, was found wrapped in a piece of waxprint in front of a house owned by a woman in her late 50s.

The woman, whose identity has been withheld by the police, is said to have handed over the baby to the Kwashieman District Police.

Good Samaritan

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mrs Afia Tenge, said the good Samaritan told the police that before she went to bed last Tuesday at about 11 p.m. she saw a wrapped item in front of her house but mistook it for waste.

She said at about 5 a.m. on Wednesday the woman said she and some members of her household heard the cry of a baby coming from the direction of the wrapped item.

“When it was unwrapped, it was found that it was a baby girl of about eight months and it was reported to the police,” she said.

Later, Mrs Tenge said the baby was taken to the Police Hospital where a thorough examination of her concluded that except being a little malnourished she was medically fit.

Mrs Tenge said the baby had since been handed over to the Department of Social Welfare for proper custody while police personnel had been deployed to gather intelligence that could lead to the whereabouts of her parents.

She therefore appealed to the public to offer information on the parent of the baby to the nearest police station.
