Residents Unhappy About Pedestrian Knockdowns

Increasing pedestrian knockdowns on the Goaso-Hwidiem stretch of road have attracted the displeasure of communities situated along the highway in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

They have however threatened to construct speed ramps on the road, which is under construction, if immediate measures were not taken to control the regular knockdowns and crashes.

According to the aggrieved residents who are mainly farmers, delayed in the rehabilitation of the 39 kilometre road was nuisance to the communities as in the past three months 11 people had been knocked down on the road leading to their death.

Madam Sophia Esi, one of the residents, said the road construction firm executing the project, had not been seen on site in the past five months.

According to her, the communities along the road had informed the Asunafo North Municipal Assembly but nothing had been done.

There are also no roads signs to guide the drivers, he added.

When contacted, Mr Mohammed Kwaku Doku, the Asunafo North Municipal District Chief Executive failed to comment on the matter.

But a police source who wished to remain anonymous at the Goaso Municipal Police Command, confirmed that 14 road accidents were recorded on the road from December 2015 to February 2016 claiming five lives with 21 others injured.

Mr Agyabeng Mensah Abrampa, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), told the GNA that some of the residents along the road had informed the Commission about the situation.

He said his outfit had made several attempts to trace the contractor but it had not been successful.

Mr Abrampa condemned the absence of the road signs on the stretch describing it as a total disregard to best road construction practices.
