Assembly Member Complains About Worsening Child Labor

Assembly member for Dedesawirako Camp electoral area at Dedeso in the Fanteakwa District has described as deeply troubling the increasing rate of child labor in predominantly fishing communities in the area.

Mr. Daniel Aklasu said engagement of children in fishing and other dangerous jobs was worsening and had become widespread.

The situation is being aggravated by the high level of poverty among the people.

He expressed the sentiment at a durbar held by the people to highlight the harm being done to children and encourage parents to provide more protection for them.

The meeting brought together chiefs, opinion leaders, parents and the fisher-folk.

Mr. Aklasu said the magnitude of the problem called for a joint effort to tackle - to assure the little ones of a better future.

Their place, he added, was in the school and not to be providing cheap labor to support family incomes.

He spoke of the need for firm measures to stop the use of minors for fishing and other economic activities that were harmful to their growth and development.
