Victims Of Let My Vote Count Demo Police Brutalities Sue IGP & Attorney General

Persons who were brutalized by Police officers during last year’s Let My Vote Count Alliance demonstration in demand of a new voters register, have sued the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Attorney General over their predicament.

The victims in a class action have resorted to the legal action in protest of the abuse of their human rights while they engaged the lawful act of demonstration.

Riot control police on 16th of September 2015, mercilessly beat some of the demonstrators with horse whips for allegedly using unapproved routes in their march to demand a new electoral roll.

A leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko was beaten with baton and horse whips while hot water was sprayed on them. A young man also lost one eye after he was shot at by the police.

The police further fired tear gas into the thick crowd in order to cow them into submission.

The police suspected the protesters were trying to deviate from the planned route and where heading to the Electoral Commission.

About 20 protesters, including the convener David Asante, were subsequently arrested as the situation turned chaotic. The police action was roundly condemned by human rights activists and organizations.

Speaking to Kasapa News, the Convener of the Let My Vote Count Alliance, David Asante stated that the group feels very strongly about the police brutalities, hence wants the court to decide on the matter.

“We have instructed our lawyer; Akoto Ampaw who has filed a writ at the Human Rights Court seeking for damages for unlawful harm and breach of fundamental human rights to persons who took part in the demonstration on the 16th of September. We consider this a serious matter; we want both the IGP and Attorney General to answer questions on this issue”.
