New Towing Vehicles For The MTTU

The Inspector General of Police, Paul Tawiah Quaye, is said to have ordered new towing cars for the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Police Service. The MTTU boss, ACP Daniel Avorgah, who disclosed to peacefmonline, also hinted that every region will soon have at least two towing vehicles when the placement order arrives, by the end of next year. The move is to complement efforts by private towing services in the country in coming to the aid of drivers with broken down vehicles, especially in the middle of the road. All monies generated from the hiring of the MTTU towing vehicle are paid into the Consolidated Fund. According to ACP Avorgah the MTTUs fleet of towing vehicles are limited, a situation which has made it impossible for them to provide efficient services as required. The number of vehicles that have broken down is more than our capacity to tow them, he stated. Citing the Greater Accra Region as an example, he said the region has only two towing vehicles to serve a population of more than 5million, adding that their Mercedes International truck, used purposely in towing heavy cars, has broken down since November last year. . The MTTU boss attributed to the rapid breaking down of cars in the middle of the road to the influx of home used cars, which he said have now taken over most of our roads. As a matter of fact these cars cannot withstand the unfavourable weather conditions in the West Africa sub-region as such they tend to break down quite easily in the middle of a journey and with no available vehicle to tow them away, these cars are abandoned on the road, leading to avoidable accidents, injuries and sometimes death, he said. . He advised all drivers not to hesitate in calling on the police when their cars break down in the middle of the roads as the law will not spare anyone who flouts road traffic regulations.
