After two years of research, the Animal Research Institute (ARI) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has come out with two breeds of poultry adaptive to the Ghanaian environment. The birds, known as ARIBRO are produced from the nucleus population of a grandparent stock of high breed birds.
The parent stock is the only population that can regenerate itself into parent stock through hatcheries while the ARIBRO commercial will produce day old chicks for farmers. The breeds take between 17 and 23 weeks to reach maturity with high meat yield, 99 per cent egg laying ability, 93 per cent growth rent coupled with good feed efficiency and high livability.
The maturity of the ordinary bird varied and depends on the way it is fed. Speaking at the launch of the new breed on Tuesday at the CSIR office as Frafraha, the leader of the ARIBRO project, Dr. Kwame Boa-Amponsem, said the research finding would revitalize the country�s poultry industry towards high profit and well being of farmers. He said each hen stock would produce 130 day old chicks daily while the grand parents stock would produce 2,300 a week. Dr. Boa Amponsem said the only challenge facing the institute was how to turn the foreign market into a local industry and a source of employment.
