The chairman of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) committee in charge of the Black Maidens, Augustine Asante, has promised that having the national women's Under-17 team playing in oversized jerseys will never happen again.

The Maidens on Saturday March 26 lined up in the first half of their World Cup qualifiers against Morocco wearing visibly oversized all-white long sleeve jerseys.

The team returned in the second half in the same jerseys, but then with the long sleeves roughly cut off with a pair of scissors to reduce the size and weight of the kits.

Reacting to the embarrassment in an interview with Class Sports, Mr Asante explained they did not know the jerseys were oversized.

He revealed that Ghana’s women’s team has no kit sponsor but rather depends on the men for jerseys.

“It is unfortunate. Puma is GFA’s kit sponsor. Unfortunately, they do not sponsor the women’s teams. They sponsor the Black Stars, so, jerseys that are sent to the FA are meant for the men, big men for that matter; the small (jerseys) ones among them are given to the women,” he said.

“The one they used on Saturday was given to the team some few days before the match, and we didn’t know they were so large for the girls; that is why we used them. But when we get them early and there is any work to be done on them, we do that. It is unfortunate last Saturday we couldn’t get the jerseys to work on them and it is not going to happen again.”

The Black Maidens, despite their oversized jerseys, beat Morocco 6-0 for a 10-0 aggregate victory.

The Maidens had earlier beaten their North African counterparts 4-0 in Rabat.
