Residents, relatives and friends are yet to come to terms with the unfortunate death of a seven-year-old girl which occurred during last Monday’s heavy downpour, flooding most parts of Ho, the Volta Regional capital.
The deceased, who has been identified as Daniela Akorfa Okai, a primary one pupil of the Mawuli EP Basic School, was reportedly electrocuted in her house.
Sources close to the family narrated that Daniela was electrocuted by a metallic television pole mounted outside their home at SOWETO, a suburb of Ho-Ahoe.
One of the sources who gave her name as Akortsu, said the girl was found stuck to the metallic pole by her mother on her return from nature’s call.
In an attempt to rescue her daughter, she had an electric shock and quickly called for help. Unfortunately, Daniela died at the Ho Municipal Hospital hours later.
DAILY GUIDE inquiries revealed that a brief burial ceremony was held last Wednesday morning for her. It was later revealed that the pole was exposed to a naked electric wire on the building.
Furious Residents
In a related development, residents, tourists and shop owners in Ho have expressed worry and fear that the capital is gradually becoming flood prone just like the national capital, Accra.
According to most of them, the well laid-out, serene and clean city is becoming a pale shadow of itself as the population and infrastructure increase so much that parts of the municipality flood at least twice yearly.
These sentiments were expressed after dwellers in the regional capital last Monday experienced a heavy downpour which flooded their homes, shops, streets and also destroyed some properties.
The heavy rains, which began about 5:00pm and lasted over an hour, were accompanied by storms and lightening.
Some affected areas included Ho-Dome, Dome-Housing-Lorry Station, Barracks, YMCA-Civic Centre, Asanyame, Ho-Bankoe, Anlokordzi, OLA-Market and Ho Poly road.
When DAILY GUIDE toured parts of the capital after the rains, some affected residents were seen scooping water and sand debris out of their shops and homes. Others were also seen packing their personal effects to safety, while others were seen drying wet items.
The Ho Municipal Chief Executive, Mrs. Fafa Adinyirah and her team were seen touring the affected areas. She blamed the flooding on poor sanitation and building on water ways among others.
