DKM Victims Jubilate Over Wampahs Exit

Some customers of DKM Diamond Microfinance have been reacting to news about the early retirement of the governor of Bank of Ghana (BoG), Kofi Wampah.

While some are excited about Dr. Wampah’s decision to bow out early, others are against it. They believe the governor should be made to stay and fix the mess he has created in the microfinance sector.

Some have also asked that the Head of Supervision of other financial institutions department at the Bank of Ghana, Raymond Amanfu, be made to proceed on an early retirement as well.

Today, Thursday March 31, 2016 will be Dr. Wampah’s last day in office after he announced he would be retiring earlier than expected.

His retirement was received with shock from many quarters, particularly the business sector.

Some have attributed his early exit to the some issues that have bedevilled the Central Bank, including the microfinance scam, for which President Mahama publicly reprimanded the Bank. He has denied this.

Denial or not, some customers of DKM Diamond Microfinance in the Upper West region told Joy News' Rafiq Salam that they are excited about the decision.

They believe his retirement will pave way for the right things to be done at the BoG.

“Yes we are indeed very happy that the BoG governor is bowing out earlier than his intended retirement. Indeed, that will tell anybody who has been given public office that if you fail to perform, the powers that be will ask you to get out,” said one of the victims.

The aggrieved customer added, “So we are indeed happy except that we expect that all other officers, particularly the officer who was directly in charge of microfinance should be seen to be going out together with Wampah so that new officers will come in and try to sort the situation out,”

Another customer told Rafiq that “I received the news with mixed feeling. It is good he moves out of the position because he has not been able to live prudently as we expected of him. He has superintended over a period that people have been made to suffer a lot of injustice because of his inefficiency.”

However, the situation is not the same in the Brong Ahafo region.

At Nkoranza where Joy News correspondent Anass Sabit Anass reports from, some customers of the microfinance institution are not happy about the development.

“He must stay and fix the mess he has created. He shouldn’t leave yet, he should wait and pay us all our monies before he leaves. He is not done with the job he was assigned to do,” one customer told Anass.
