Sports Bill Set For Parliamentary Deliberations

The Sports Bill 2016 is currently before Parliament and soon, all related discussions and deliberations will be done by the legislative house possibly leading to its passage and eventual ascent by the President.

If passed, the bill will redesign how the nation’s sports is run leading to more development in the sector.

The bill currently has sections dealing with a creation of a new sports administrative body called the “National Sports Commission”.

According to the bill, the commission will promote and encourage the organisation and development of, and mass participation in amateur and professional sports; - encourage increased participation and improved performance in sports; – to encourage the private sector to contribute to the funding of sports.

The bill states that the commission will have a governing body and it also outlines the allowances to be earned by its members and how the commission will be funded. The bill also mentions the creation of a public interest committee to help with the administration of sports in Ghana.

There is also the indication that regional sports committees will be created for each region and there will also be district sports units.

According to the document presented to Parliament, the bill is to bring Ghana in conformity with internationally-accepted standards and norms in terms of sports administration.
