One Person Dead In Renewed Bolga Chieftaincy Clashes

One person has died in a renewed chieftaincy dispute in the Upper East regional capital of Bolgatanga.

Eight others are said to have sustained various degrees of gunshot and machete wounds following clashes between two rival chiefs; Naba Joseph Apakre Nyaaba and Naba Raymond Alafia Abilba.

The deceased has been identified as one Akaferey Anoman, 30.

According to GraphicOnline’s Vincent Amenuveve, there are conflicting reports as to what might have caused the disturbance.

The clash was said to have erupted at a funeral held around the Bolgatanga Sports Stadium area at about 1:30pm on Sunday.

The rival factions who are all members of the same family were present at the funeral of a relative.

A combined team of police and military personnel have intensified patrols in the Municipality to avert any reprisals.

Background

In May last 2015, controversy rocked the Bolgatanga Skin when two persons were enskinned at two separate ceremonies as Bolga Nabas.

They are Mr.Raymond Alafia Abilba, 50, a lawyer whose stool name is Naba Awogeya-Lebna Abilba IV and Mr.Joseph Apakre, 35, a Sales Executive of the Ghana Cement Company Limited (GHACEM) in charge of the Upper East and Northern Regions whose stool name is Naba Abeka Noge Buuri Maltinga. The skin became vacant in September 2013 after the demise of the late Martin Abilba III.

The Judicial Committee of the Upper East Region House of Chiefs is yet to come out with its ruling regarding who is the legitimate chief of Bolgatanga. The Committee is expected to sit again on October 05,2015.
