I Am Guilty - Wedding Robber Tells Court

The bridegroom who was arrested on his wedding altar at the Aldersgate Methodist Church at Anaji in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis for allegedly robbing a Chinese National has eventually admitted to committing the crime.

Aaron Acquah pleaded guilty before a Prestea Magistrate Court yesterday.

The suspect, wearing white shirt over a pair of black trouser pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge of robbery, when he was arraigned before a Prestea Magistrate Court, presided over by Mr. Frank Ashitey.

Looking calm and composed the accused was consequently remanded into prison custody to reappear on May 3, 2016.

This, according to the court, would allow the Police enough time to complete its investigation into the charge, for which he has been arraigned before the court.

The facts of the case were presented before the court by inspector Raphael Bomata.

The officer in charge of the preastea Hunni Valley Criminal Investigation Department (CID), ASP Emmanuel Nwinsori, who confirmed the story in a telephone interview with this reporter, said his outfit would on the case from the Magistrate Court to the Circuit Court.

This is because the Magistrate Court does not have the jurisdiction to hear the case. He explained that his outfit decided to arraign the accused person before the Magistrate Court in order to get him remanded, in line with the 48-hour duration permitted by law to keep a suspect under police custody.

It would be recalled that the congregation at the Aldersgate Methodist Church was thrown into state of pandemonium last Saturday when two police men from Bogoso stormed the church premises, walked up to the altar and handcuffed the groom, when he was about to exchange wedding rings with his bride.

Momentarily, the congregants who watched the two police officers handcuff the groom thought they were watching a movie, but in reality the groom had been arrested in connection with a robbery incident that saw the latter allegedly rob a Chinese national to the tune if GH18,000.

The bride, who could not behold the sight of the Police arresting her husband on their wedding day, eventually collapsed.

Information available to this reporter indicates that the bride was later revived, ten minutes after the incident.
