A photo of four Ghanaian women waiting in a queue to stake lotto is generating interesting discussions on social media with some persons asking if women have now taken over the practice, which they perceive is a sole preserve for men.
Some have even interpreted the four ladies’ decision to stake lotto to mean, the country’s harsh economic conditions have been hitting them hard.
But counter arguments suggested that women have already been in the forefront of staking lotto from a very long time.
Whatever it is, lotto is indeed not a new thing to the ordinary Ghanaian. It has been around for a very long time and has now metamorphosed into other games on TV and radio platforms.
There is currently the existence of National Lottery Authority (NLA), a statutory agency of Ghana, under the Ministry of Finance that oversees lottery affairs.
The then Kwame Nkrumah administration created the Department of National Lotteries and established it under the Lotteries Act (1958).
The department was incorporated into the Lotteries and Betting Act of 1960.
The NLA is a member of the International Association of State Lotteries and the African Association of State Lotteries.
It is obvious that lotto is somewhat a big area contributing to national economy in Ghana.
