Ghanaian traders engaged in the sale of fishing gears are threatening to lock up shops belonging to Chinese nationals believed to be taking over their retail business.

According to the aggrieved traders, the Chinese who are mainly their suppliers, have now established shops in the country and are engaging in retailing of the fishing gears and other equipment, which is the preserve of Ghanaian businesses.

One of the traders, who doubles as the Organizer of the Association of Importers and Distributors of Fishing Gear, Bright Asare, speaking to Citi Business News at Cow lane in Accra, lamented that all efforts to have government to stop the activities of the Chinese in the sector have proved futile.

He insisted that they will lock the Chinese shops instead of demonstrating to draw government’s attention to their plight.

According to him, the Chinese, who sell their wares at cheaper rates, have eventually forced some of the traders out of business, whereas those still in the business are recording low sales.

“I will not organize demonstration in this hot sun. I will buy padlock, we will lock all their shops and when we lock their shops they will report to the Police” adding that when such happens the appropriate authorities will know how serious they are.

“The president has to do something about it before we get up next week. We are not breaking the law,” he insisted.
