Mob Lynches "Car Battery Thief" At Mamobi

An alleged thief was Wednesday night beaten to death by an angry mob at Mamobi in Accra.

He was said to have attempted to steal the battery of a parked commercial vehicle, popularly called trotro, at around 9:30pm.

An eyewitness who narrated the incidence to this reporter said the driver of the trotro had parked the car on the shoulder of the road to watch a football match at a nearby football watching centre in the area.

According to him, the thief realizing how quiet the place was managed to break into the car and was about to leave with the battery but luck eluded him when the driver returned to drive off.

He said the driver demanded from the alleged thief what he was doing with his battery and immediately drew the attention of people around who began beating him.

The thief was later dragged towards the Mamobi Hospital drive where he was beaten some more by the mob.

Another eye witness said the alleged thief was recently released from the Nsawam prisons.

According to him, he heard the alleged thief pleading for his life while screaming in pain with words such as “I am going to die”,  “Please don’t kill me”, but that did not appeal to his assailants who were relentless and intensified the assault.

The eye witness said in the cause of the beating, some of the assailants began stabbing him with various sharp objects but he believed a knife was what struck a fatal blow.

The police were later called to intervene but it was too late by which time the thief had already died.

The police later conveyed the body to the Police Hospital.
