A 16-year-old boy accused of stealing a mobile phone has been allegedly assaulted by two soldiers from the Tamale Airborne Force.
The victim, Christopher Bama, who is currently in a critical condition at the Nsawam Government Hospital, is said to have stolen the TECNO branded mobile phone which belonged to one of the soldiers, Corporal Sampson Atuahene.
The Chronicle newspaper in its Thursday, April 21 edition published that Bama’s accusers, Corporal Atuahene and Collins Agyei Boamah, handcuffed and hanged him on a mango tree. They also allegedly subjected him to beatings until he fell unconscious. According to the newspaper, the two soldiers further melted plastic bags onto the naked body of Bama until he regained consciousness.
A senior sister of Bama, Patience Bama, who witnessed the incident told the Chronicle newspaper that her brother had gone to the military quarters at Shishegu to fetch water.
According to her, on leaving the quarters, the soldiers called him back and accused him of taking the mobile phone.
She said when her brother denied taking the phone; the two pounced on him and beat him to pulp and further threatened to kill him if he failed to produce the phone.
According to her, pleas for her brother to be set free were ignored by the two soldiers so she reported the case at the Tamale Metro Police Station.
She said the Crime Officer then called the Military High Command in the Northern Region to intervene before Bama was sent to the God Cares Community Hospital at Lamashegu where he was said to have had a head injury as a result of the brutality meted out to him.
The newspaper reported that although the soldiers have admitted beating Bama, they are walking freely and are allegedly demanding that the victim’s family pay for the missing phone.
