Gov�t Is Committed To Supporting Lesser Developed Sports - Sports Minister

Youth and Sports Minister, Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye has confirmed that government has directed some monies to the National Sports Authority for sports development, Peacefmonline.com has gathered.

According to the Sports Minister, government is committed to developing the less financed Sporting disciplines especially as we inch closer to the Rio Games in August this year.

“Government has given some monies to each of the sporting disciplines to develop the sports . . . if every association is trying their best to do few championship before the games in Brazil, government will support,” he said.

Ghana have so far qualified six athletes to the upcoming Rio Olympics in Brazil.

Alexander Amankwah-qualified for the 800m, he became the first athlete to book a qualification mark at the games in Rio. He competed for the country at the Congo Brazziville All Africans Games.

Flings Owusu-Agyapong recorded a personal best of 11.30s in the 100m at the Miami Hurricane Alumni Invitational in the USA.

Sean Safo-Antwi completed his nationality switch from Britain to Ghana and qualified at his personal best 6.56s which won him Glasgow Indoors Grand Prix.

Javelin thrower, John Ampomah, Paralympic power lifter Charles Narh Teye and bantamweight boxer Abdul Wahid Omar have all qualified.

The Minister commended the Ghana Weightlifting Federation for their Youth and Junior Championship held at the Sports Hall of the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday.
