James Kwabena Bomfeh, Special Aide to the CPP Flagbearer Ivor Kobina Greenstreet, has urged Ghanaians as well as civil society groups to stop "demonizing" the Electoral Commission (EC).

Speaking on Peace FM's Kokrokoo, Kabila, as he is affectionately called, noted that the Commission as an institution will not always get it right but that does not warrant any attempt to character assassinate it (EC).

Some pro- opposition groups and parties led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have questioned the credibility of the current voters’ register, and have insisted on a process to conduct a proper cleaning, after their calls for an entirely new register were rejected by the Electoral Commission.

And even before that debate died down, a new logo, which appeared in place of EC’s original logo a couple of weeks ago, surfaced, causing consternation among the public with some suggesting that the commission must not change the original one.

Critics were of the view the new logo does not reflect the work of the commission and that the current one rather communicates better what the commission stands for.

As if that is not enough flak, they have questioned the Commission’s education drive on the electioneering process saying it has not effectively started though there are still some seven months to the general polls.

The EC will hold a limited registration exercise on Thursday, April 28.

Commenting on these electoral issues, the CPP member asked Ghanaians to cease bastardizing the Electoral Management body unnecessarily.

He however advised Ghanaians to utilize the opportunity created by the EC for those who do not have their names in the electoral register to register when the exercise opens this week.

The importance of the exhibition of the voters’ register scheduled from April 28 to May 8 this year cannot be over-emphasied. The exercise is essential in the electoral process because it offers all registered voters the opportunity to check their names and particulars whiles also ensuring either the removal or correction of the names of the dead, minors and voters who have engaged in double registering.

It will also allow those who have now attained age 18 and those who are above that age but could not register during the last registration exercise, to register.

Kabila called on Ghanaians, particular those above 18 years who haven’t registered, to go out to the designated centers and have their names written in the register.

“They (EC) are not always right and they will not always be right. But we can say it in a manner without demonizing the Electoral Commission.”

He also slammed the EC for failing to make adequate advertising on the exercise that will be held on Thursday.
