The Vehicle Inspection and Technical Organisation (VITO), S-Class Services, has appealed to the Board and Management of the Driver, Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA), to take action against corrupt officials at its Ashanti Regional Office.
At a news conference in Kumasi at the weekend, the Director of Administration of VITO, Mr Samuel Konadu, alleged that about 70 per cent of private vehicles in the Region are registered through the DVLA office, without going through the due process of inspection and testing at the private vehicle testing station.
He said the registrations are done through middle men, popularly known as “Goro boys” with the collaboration of DVLA officials in the region for a cash percentage.
Mr Konadu said the testing and inspection of the yet to be registered private cars and others, which are due for renewal of roadworthy certificates is part of the DVLA efforts and measures to reduce road accidents and crashes in the country.
He said the purpose of the inspection and testing of the vehicles by VITO is to ensure road worthiness and to facilitate the safety of car owners, drivers and passengers.
"The inspection and testing process include identification, registry, payment for inspection and testing, visual and automated testing, printing and certification of road worthy certificates.
"The visual testing comprises windscreen, wipers, tyres, wheel knots and bolts, seat belt, number plates and seats, while the automated testing comprises test is made up of emission test, alignment, shock absorbers, front rear and rear brakes tests, and the lighting system."
The Administration Director revealed that the process is to avert the carnage on the roads and call the officials to order to save lives and property.
He alleged it is an offence for private car owners to go to the DVLA for roadworthy certificates or registration before coming for roadworthy certificates at VITO and offenders could be prosecuted.
He said the security agencies especially the Motor, Transport and Traffic Department of the Ghana Police Service is hunting for the culprits.
VITO S-Class Services is mandated by the DVLA under the Ministry of Transport to test the road worthiness of vehicles and issue road worthy certificates to vehicle owners.
