It may be early days yet but the Electoral Commission (EC) bid to fulfill its promise of becoming the most credible electoral regulatory body in Africa, hit a snag with the limited voter registration exercise being held nationwide.

Ahead of the general polls on November 7, today’s exercise which will round up in two weeks time, is affording persons who just turned 18 or first time voters to register.

Outcomes from today’s exercise in the Ashanti Region proves the EC has failed to score a good mark in the region as several participants who registered in today’s exercise received Voter IDs that are backdated.

Several individuals including Opoku Aboagye James, were today awarded IDs by EC officials in the Atwima-Kwanwoma Consistency that had the date of registration wrongly indicated.

The limited voters’ registration exercise has been scheduled from April 28 to May 8, 2016 and the Commissioner, Charlotte Osei, is expecting about 1.2 million people to register.

And with the general elections drawing nearer, voters may wonder when the EC would remedy the anomalies recorded should the backdating trend continue.
