The son of Former Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama says he is nursing ambition to do active politics. He was speaking in an interview with TV3 at the Tamale Children Home, where he celebrated his birthday with inmates of the orphanage.
Mr. Aliu Mahama Farouk said politics “is our blood and I hope to contest to become Member of Parliament and possibly a Minister of State”.
He said his grandfather, Alhaji Imoru Egala, was a founding father of the National People’s Party that brought Dr. Hilla Liman to become the President of the country "and my father was a Vice President as well under President J. A. Kuffour".
Mr. Farouk said he is following and practising the good work of his father by assisting the less privileged in society and that was his reason for celebrating his birthday with the orphans.
He appealed to the management of the Home to give the children good upbringing, adding that “the children need parental love and care to make them responsible people in future”. He donated assorted food items to the home including 10 mini-bags of rice, soft drinks, toilet rolls, pampers and detergents.
Mr. Farouk also gave GH¢200 to the staff of the Home and GH¢300 to a 19-year-old inmate, Kofi Yeboah, to enable him register for Senior High School private examination.
The Supervisor of the Home, Madam Augustina Quinoo, who received the items on behalf of the orphans, said there are 25 children in the home.
“The youngest is a month old and the oldest is 19 years old,” she said, adding that the inmates are made up of abandoned children, children of mentally challenged mothers, children of imprisoned mothers and mothers who died upon delivery.
Madam Quinoo said they counsel families of mothers, who died on delivery, to accept their children to integrate them in the family.
She, however, regretted that three of the children died after reintegration with their biological families.
Madam Quinoo appealed to other philanthropists to help build a fence round the Home, pointing out the fear of encroachment on the land.
“Animals and people cross the premises which is not healthy for the children.”
Mr. Farouk assured her of further assistance after his trip to the United States of America to attend "the biggest foundation meeting. Aliu Mahama Foundation is invited to participate and I will table your problems there.”
He was accompanied by some family members and some Islamic clergy.
