The Secretary-General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Kofi Asamoah has charged the country’s Electoral Commission to work with all stakeholders to ensure peaceful elections in November.
Kofi Asamoah said the seemingly charged atmosphere ahead of the polls must be diffused.
Speaking at this year’s May Day celebration in Wa in the Upper West Region, Kofi Asamoah called on the EC to work to ensure a credible election.
“There are real issues that need to be addressed by all stakeholders including the Electoral Commission, government, the political parties, media and citizens of our great country.
The most urgent of these is the most simmering mistrust among stakeholders particularly between the Electoral Commission and some political parties.”
He explained that organized labour has already engaged the EC on preparations for this year’s election adding that “we appreciate the enormity of the task ahead of the EC and we appreciate the efforts it had made so far.”
“The commission must remember that it remains subject and accountable to the good people of Ghana. It is absolutely necessary that in an election year, the commission avoids unnecessary controversy.
It must be seen to be absolutely impartial. The commission must work diligently to build confidence in itself,” Mr. Asamoah added.
Demands for new register The Electoral Commission has come under intense pressure from some pro-opposition groups who are demanding for new voters register claiming the current one is bloated with names of foreigners and minors hence unfit for the upcoming polls.
But the EC had rejected their claims but had agreed to audit the current one.
