Islamic Cleric Warns NPP To Desist From Religious Politics

Malam Shamuna Ustaz Jibril, an Islamic cleric has warned the opposition NPP to desist from religious politics if they want to win the November 7 elections.

He described NPP’s running mate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent religious comment as unfortunate – and maintained that the party’s attempt to defend such comment was unnecessary.

“Dr Bawumia and Nana Akomea the NPP Communications Director are highly respected in the country, but I personally was surprise to see them defending such comments. I will never buy that. Do not make a U-turn from your records to the wrong direction,” he advised

Dr. Bawumia over the weekend courted controversy when he implicitly indicted the presidency of a lack of religious imbalance.

While addressing party supporters last week at a village in the Sissala East District of the Upper West Region, Dr. Bawumia, Vice Presidential candidate of the NPP, said the Flagstaff House - the seat of Ghana’s Presidency - does not reflect the people of Ghana in terms of religion.

But speaking to Peacefmonline.com, the Islamic cleric opined that – religious politics if allowed would disturb Ghana’s peace.

“Dr Bawumia and the NPP communicators should let the sleeping dog lie and should not chip in religious issues into politics as I said to the Brong Ahafo minister. I individually, recommend the way our Christian counterparts relate and associate with us peacefully,” he said.

“I predicted victory for your party a year ago without your comments. It is not this remarks that will bring victory at your door steps. I am totally against it. The NPP must apologize for the unfortunate remark,” he added.
