Supreme Court To Rule On Voters Register Today

The Supreme court will today rule on the lawsuit by former National Youth Organizer of the People’s National Convention(PNC) Abu Ramadan and one other seeking a declaration that the 2012 voters’ register is not credible for the 2016 general elections.

The seven member panel of Justices presided over by the Chief Justice, Georgina Wood is expected to give judgment on the matter today.

Abu Ramadan in his suit is seeking an order to set aside the 2012 Voters Register and compelling the Electoral Commission to compile fresh Voters Register before any new public election or referendum is conducted in this country.

Abu Ramadan argues that the Supreme Court’s ruling that the National Health Insurance Card was an illegal form of identification for registering strengthens his case.

The Supreme Court had a year ago ruled that the NHIS Card does not qualify anyone to be registered as a voter.

However should the judges uphold the reliefs being sought by the plaintiffs today, it will mean the EC will have to compile a fresh register ahead of the November 7 polls.
