William Asomaning, who was released from the Nsawam prison on August 29, was on Tuesday sentenced to four years imprisonment by the Mpraeso Circuit Court for stealing and defrauding a taxi driver. Police Chief Inspector Alex Acheampong, told the court that Asomaning, who served a two-year prison term for stealing and defrauding a taxi driver in 2007, committed a similar offence under a different name. The prosecutor told the court that in 2007 the ex-convict then known as Stephen Asomaning, a mason, hired a taxi from Nnatieso to escort a cargo truck full of lumber to Accra for sale. He said on their way Asomaning collected the taxi driver�s mobile phone and GHC 75 to enable him to communicate with some people and also use the money to bribe security personnel at check points. The prosecutor said when they got to Nkawkaw, Asomaning told the driver to stop to enable him to see his people at the timber market but he did not return. The driver made a report to the police and Asomaning was later arrested and sentenced to two years imprisonment. The prosecutor said on August 8 this year the ex-convict, using the name William Asomaning, hired a taxi cab from Suhum to Nkawkaw to escort lumber to Accra for sale. On their way Asomaning asked the taxi driver to give him his mobile phone to make a call but the driver told him that he had left the phone at Suhum. Asomaning told the driver to return to Suhum to pick the phone and he obliged. He said when they got to Nkawkaw, Asomaning told the driver to send him to a house at the outskirt of the town to collect some money from his brother but he tried to escape and was arrested and handed over to the police.
